U-48 In terms of tonnage sunk and damaged, U-48 was World War IIs most successful U-boat. On 12 war patrols, from August 1939 to June 1941, the Type VIIB boat sank 52 ships (307,935 tons) and damaged three others (20,480 tons). She was scuttled on 3 May 1945 off Neustadt, Germany.
