The USS Harmon was the first ship to be named after an African-American. The Harmon honored Mess Attendant First Class Leonard Roy Harmon, who posthumously was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. Petty Officer Harmon was serving aboard the USS San Francisco and was killed in action at the time.
