Pictopia was founded as an online professional and fine art photo lab in 1999 near San Francisco, California. Working directly with fine art and other professional photographers and images, we grew. Then in 2002 several of our photographer clients came to us and explained how their employers, the San Francisco bay area newspapers, needed an online photo reprint and fulfillment solution. Soon after that Pictopia's "Image Commerce" solution was born. By providing an online and dedicated solution for their readers requests for photographs and reprints, it solved a huge pain for them while creating a very positive branding experience. In the years since then, Pictopia has grown to become the leading provider of professionally sourced photographs directly to consumers for their homes and offices, both through our network of partners web sites and our own. Today our partners include many of the world's top media companies, historic collections, photographers, and other organizations.

In June, 2010, Pictopia relaunched its web site as a destination site for individuals who appreciate quality photography. Fine art experts have curated and selected the best images from our partner network and brought them to our pictopia.com.
