| Communication is essential for any government, and throughout its history, the U.S. Government has used broadsides and posters to convey information to the people. The government also used these notices for their persuasive powers, to urge citizens to support its programs. The bulk of the 17,000+ posters in the National Archives Still Picture Branch were produced during the two world wars, and most are found in the records of Federal organizations involved with or interested in war issues and concerns. For the most part, the themes promoted were recruitment for the Armed Forces, conservation of products and resources needed for the wars, and greater production of goods and war materials. The posters featured in this collection convey gripping messages and powerful images that helped to inspire patriotism and keep the nation informed about issues critical to the war efforts. |
