An East London family moves to safer quarters after losing their home on the opening night of the Blitz. The first German air raid on central London took place on the night of August 23, and the British retaliated with an attack on Berlin two days later. The Blitz, Hitler's attempt to demoralize the English people through concentrated bombing of population centers, particularly London, and industrial facilities, began on the night of September 7, 1940, and lasted until May 11 the next year.
