Egypt, December 1940 -- Italy invaded Egypt from
Libya on September 13, 1940 and in early
December, Britain launched an offensive against the
Italians in North Africa. Here, newly arrived British
troops leave their camp to train for desert warfare.
The outnumbered British won a series of dramatic
battles and might have driven Axis forces from
North Africa completely had the Cabinet not
diverted forces to Greece in February 1941. (AP
